18.34 12 Sept. I have received a large number of emails from your faction. I do not propose to reply to them individually. Many of them, I do not propose to reply to at all. However, Pietro Salk, a man whom I admired and respected, seems to have entrusted you with certain information. That is the reason I am willing to participate in this conversation.

Some of you have emailed me with allegations concerning my involvement in the theft of the Receda Cube. In complete absence of evidence, I do not intend to dignify those accusations with a response. However, I possess certain information which might be of interest to you and am willing to provide it on the same terms which I agreed with Pietro. I will not give up the knowledge I possess simply to be arrested and sent to prison. I need immunity from prosecution and confirmation that I will be provided with police protection. If you on Earth feel you can somehow procure this for me, by all means do so. Otherwise, I'm afraid to inform you that the Perplex City police are unlikely to take seriously a set of wild allegations from a set of people on a different world against a person of some wealth and importance.

As an expression of goodwill, I am willing to answer one of your questions. Yes, I have heard the name Viendenbourg before. In connection with a piece of technical equipment I believe that an ex (now late) acquaintance of mine had in his possession after he arranged for it to be stolen from the Academy.

I must inform you also that I am surprised and aggrieved to discover that my secure connection has been passed from person to person in an underhand fashion, without seeking my permission. I am sure I am being watched; we must raise as little suspicion as possible. Even a single visitor to my apartment will draw attention, more than that may prove fatal to us all.
