Sente Kiteway

The Master of the Academy

Sente is Master of the Perplex City Academy. The Cube was stolen from under his nose and he was determined to get it back.

Having traced the Cube as far as Earth, Sente came up with a controversial plan: to enlist our help by turning the hunt into a huge, enthralling puzzle. Was it a brilliant strategy? Or an attempt to hide the truth?

As well as being a stern and mysterious pillar of the community, Sente is also father to Violet and Scarlett Kiteway.

An epic entry from Violet - in length as well as importance. Not only does she recount 'Operation Bayonet', but she also reveals how she discovered that Caine killed Anna. Turns out that 'Faberling' is not only the name of Caine's new single - it was also Anna's very secret pet name for her husband Fleming. Either Caine and Anna were having an affair, or she told him the name as a final clue to the others, pointing the finger just before she died.

Violet has been going out with a liar and a killer for a year. She's trying to deal with it.

Kurt and Helena plan to narrow down the target area while her team works out how best to assault the location and rescue Scarlett. The assault is planned for Tuesday Jan 30th.

A slow news day at The Sentinel... The Annual Academy Snowball fight is won by the Languages department. Sente's absence is briefly noted.

Helena agrees to help, and fills Kurt in on what she knows about the Third Power's communications. It centres around a defunct network called Relaynet, which is laid alongside the city's underground rail lines. Kurt is sure the Cube Hunters on Earth can help to track down where the Third Power's messages are being sent from. Helena offers him (and us) access to her case notes.

Kurt calls Helena Frye and asks for help in saving Scarlett. Helena is a little sceptical about the whole Earth-object-in-Sente's-house story, but she agrees to look into it. She even offers Kurt a job.

New Council Leader Nathan Earlywine limits the data link between Earth and Perplex City, insisting on a screening system to block 'potentially dangerous or subversive' material. Even the Sentinel may be censored. The order is put into effect today.

The Cube Hunters help to piece together the information hidden in the 'scrambled' files. Looks like there have been some fairly unsavoury experiments taking place at Viendenbourg - including the one that zapped Major Jake Maine over to Lancewood - and Sente authorised them all.

Now Scarlett and Violet have to decide what to do with this newfound intelligence. Who can they tell?

Back on the road again

Violet and Scarlett set off for Viendenbourg, to find out what's been going on. There are many questions to be answered: who was Major Jake Maine? Who was experimenting on him, and why? What (if anything) does it have to do with the Cube?

With luck, this week should make things a little clearer.

Kurt works out that the squiggly lines correspond to the landscape of the Lancewood Archipelago - a rather remote set of islands off the coast. So Scarlett and Violet book passage on the next chater boat out there. They'll need to get some directions from the Reconstructionists, though, who know the islands best.

Also, Scarlett meets a guy from the electrical authority called Emory, who tells her that various safety systems had been physically disabled before the blackout, meaning that it was all planned well in advance. Interesting...

Academy Secrecy Harms City, Council Must Intervene Now

The Sentinel speaks out - and fiercely attacks the Academy, accusing them of causing the blackout and demanding an explanation. They start a protest campaign, encouraging all and sundry to email protest@perplexcitysentinel.com to voice their displeasure.

Scarlett is shipped off to stay with her Uncle Sanjean while it all kicks off in the Kiteway household. Needless to say, she isn't too pleased.

Violet gives her account of the blackout. She was with Kurt when it happened, and the enormity of it all wasn't immediately apparent... but it's sunk in now. Even on Earth, the darkness seems deeper.

City Loses Power, Data Connection to Earth Lost for 2 Days

The city suffers a huge power cut and the data link to Earth is lost. (All Perplex City websites become inaccessible from Earth.) Sente blames the Third Power - but everyone else blames him.

The San Francisco Connection

The largest Perplex City event on Earth... and perhaps the most nerve-wracking. What was supposed to be a celebration turned into a matter of extreme urgency, when the data link to Perplex City was lost. It was sabotage, apparently carried out by the Third Power. An emergency site was erected by Mind Candy, explaining the situation.

Connecting the new link in San Francisco became a much more important (and much tougher) proposition. Without the Academy on hand to help, the Cube Hunters were left to solve hundreds of online and offline clues to re-establish communications.

Not one

Violet and Kurt come to a decision: they can no longer risk people's lives in this investigation. Their own lives, perhaps, but not other people's. They can't face causing again the kind of misery they've seen in the Heath household. Vi also gives us an insight into how Caine and Scarlett have been reacting.

Scarlett finally hears about the death of Anna. It all brings back painful memories of when Scarlett lost her own mother.
